The shift in AI that will matter most to corporate teams in 2026

For the last two years, most of the executive conversation about AI has centered on chatbots.
That makes sense. Chatbots are easy to understand. They answer questions, live on a website or inside an internal tool, and feel relatively easy to deploy without changing how anyone actually works.
But expectations are changing. AI is no longer just being asked for answers. It’s being asked to do work.

You can see this shift clearly in Google Trends data from the past year. Search interest for “chatbot” has flattened and begun to decline, landing in the mid-40s by January 2026 after peaking earlier in 2025. Over the same period, searches for “AI agent” climbed from near zero last spring to around 70 by mid-January 2026, while “agentic AI” rose even more sharply, moving from the teens early in the year to peaks near 90 in late 2025 before settling around 50.
In practical terms, the shift is from chatbots that answer questions to agents that execute work and move tasks to the finish line.
That distinction is now showing up in products. In January 2025, OpenAI introduced Operator, describing it as “one of our first agents” that can execute tasks using a browser. In July 2025, OpenAI pushed further with “ChatGPT agent,” positioning it as bridging “research and action.” Around the same time, enterprise platforms began treating agents as a new layer of software rather than a feature. Look at the standard-bearers: By late 2025, Salesforce had shifted the Agentforce narrative away from 'what is possible' to 'how to govern at scale.' Microsoft followed suit at Ignite, moving Copilot from a sidebar assistant to an orchestrator that lives inside the tools where work actually happens.
Even if you never use these platforms, the signal is clear. The market is moving from AI that talks to AI that acts.
Why this shift matters inside organizations
Most companies already know AI is here. McKinsey’s 2025 research found that nearly all employees and executives are familiar with generative AI. However, while awareness is no longer the issue, the harder question is how AI fits into daily work.
Early AI experiments often feel like a magic trick that stops halfway. You get an answer that looks right, but it’s trapped in a chat window. It isn’t connected to your CRM, your calendar, or your budget. It’s the kind of output that invites a shrug and the question: “Okay, but who is actually going to do something with this?”
This is where the honeymoon phase ends. When AI moves from "brainstorming partner" to "active participant," the questions get tougher. Leaders stop asking "What can it do?" and start asking "Can we trust it to touch our data?" and "Who is responsible if it makes a mistake?"
This is why the conversation has shifted from capability to control. Salesforce’s 2025 Agentforce updates explicitly called out visibility and governance as blockers to scale. As AI becomes more capable, it also demands more structure. That’s usually the point where pilots slow down, not speed up. The companies pulling ahead are embedding AI directly into workflows instead of treating it as an optional add on.
Where early wins with agentic AI are showing up
When you’re looking for a place to start, don't just pick a department and hope for the best. Instead, look for a specific workflow that checks three boxes: it happens constantly, it has a clear beginning and end, and it actually hurts the business every hour it sits unfinished. Here are some examples:
1) Customer support
Companies like Booking.com and Microsoft are using agent style AI to handle the first layer of support. When a customer requests a reservation change or account update, the system can recognize intent, pull relevant policies, and either complete the task or route it to the right team with context attached. Human agents step in only when issues are complex. So instead of opening every ticket cold, agents start with the context already in front of them. Booking.com has also cited this approach as key to operating support at global scale, and Microsoft has discussed similar deployments across its service teams.
Lyft uses the same pattern for driver support. AI agents handle common policy and eligibility questions and escalate edge cases with full context. This significantly reduces resolution times.
2) HR
Walmart uses agentic AI not just to answer questions, but to trigger changes. Instead of just explaining the scheduling policy, the system can autonomously process a shift swap or update a benefit election across internal systems. Employees get answers or complete basic requests without involving HR, speeding responses and reducing repetitive work. It also means HR teams answer the same question fewer times, which turns out to matter more than most dashboards capture.
IBM has deployed similar agents for internal HR and IT support. IBM’s agents don’t just tell an employee how to get IT access; they execute the access request directly. The shift isn't in the conversation but in the fact that the 'routine ticket' never has to be created in the first place because the AI already closed it. IBM has reported lower routine ticket volume and more time spent on higher value work.
3) Sales and enablement
OpenAI uses AI agents to manage inbound sales requests. The system reads inquiries, drafts responses, and routes qualified leads to reps with context already attached, allowing a small team to handle far more inbound volume. In practice, it means fewer late nights rewriting the same responses.
Vercel has described a similar setup, with AI handling early sales interactions so reps focus on closing rather than administrative work.
Across all three areas, the pattern is the same, and it’s not subtle once you see it. AI isn’t replacing people or operating on the sidelines. It’s embedded into workflows, handling routine steps and handing off to humans when judgment matters.
That same pattern explains why many AI initiatives stall. Without a clear workflow and definition of success, they remain demos instead of operational tools.
How we evaluate real agent wins at aidatalyst

Start with one workflow and define the finish line. The best candidates are repeatable processes where it’s clear what “done” looks like and how uncertainty should be handled.
Build trust into the experience. Users need to see where answers come from, how confident the system is, and how to escalate to a human when needed. Trust is earned in use, not explained in slides.
Measure it like an operator. The goal isn’t to show that AI is impressive. It’s to show that the work improved, whether that’s faster support resolution, fewer HR interruptions, or shorter sales cycles. If you can’t measure the change, scaling is hard to justify.
If you’re looking for a place to start, look at your highest volume requests: support tickets, HR questions, enablement asks, reporting cycles. Pick the one that reliably creates friction every week. If a workflow consistently frustrates smart people, it’s rarely a people problem. It’s usually telling you exactly where AI belongs.
And in 2026, the companies that listen to that signal will move faster than the ones still debating tools.
